Document of the Day – RG 393, Entry 5364

New Lincoln!  Discovered last week in Records of the Army Command  Have searched through the Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln and have not found this document.  What is fascinating about this letter?  U. S. Marshal of the District of Columbia Ward Lamon Hill, writes Abraham Lincoln asking him to solve the problem facing D.C. – disorderly soldiers.  He writes suggesting that if the President does not take care of the situation, he will form his own division to resolve the problems.  In August, Congress passes a bill which creates the Metropolitan Police Dept. of Washington, D.C.
